Rebutton

Rebutton

Rebutton

Idea category: Mold for plastic recycling and Process for making a ReButton from one bottle cap.

Author: Chris Obrist, manager at FabLab Luzern developed the ReButton. It is now online and open source for anyone to develop their ReButtons and become authors.

Description of the idea

Short description of idea: With one single bottle cap (one million of them are being bought every minute) you can turn what would be waste and land in the wrong place into a ReButton. The directions for how to make it – the mold and the process – are online here: http://fablab-luzern.ch/rebutton-anleitung/.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? The ReButton mold can be made by anyone who has access to a FabLab.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? The ReButton makes citizens aware that the cap is not made of the same material as the PET bottle and that it has to be separated in the recycling process. When you make a ReButton you learn about plastic as a material, about recycling and about how important design is for a circular and sustainable future.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? This is an easy way to learn and teach anyone about plastic and recycling. The result is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that will make anyone happy.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? Because it is such an awesome idea we are looking forward to the ReButton appearing on the crowdsourcing platform as a symbol of how we can change the bottle production. Furthermore, you can sell your special ReButtons in the marketplace.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? See the link http://fablab-luzern.ch/rebutton-anleitung/.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? It will take you no time to collect the bottle caps you need to make the ReButton. Then you have bring some used heat-resistant wood to make the mold of 2x recycling.

Business/Scale and Impact As an open source project there is a big potential for large scale dissemination of the idea and of the ReButton. But it remains a pedagogical tool meant to lead you to revaluate plastic.

Design Competition

Design Competition - Revaluate Your Yoghurt Jar

Design Competition - Revaluate Your Yoghurt Jar

Idea category: Plastic Revaluation Product Development Competition

Author: Marianne Wilmsmeier is a businesswoman, freethinker, maker and founder of People’s Factory. After 15 years in the “key figure industry”, she changed fronts to focus on innovation. After years of working with people, markets and innovations, she is sure that digital production technology – consequently adapted to enhance the user experience and embedded in a completely new context – will unfold an incredibly positive potential in the hands of the citizens and respond to many longings!

Description of the Idea

Short description of idea: The idea is to set up a competition amongst product designers (professionals and students) to develop different products that can be made from a yoghurt jar and its PE-LD 04 plastic cap. How about a beautiful sugar sprinkler, for example?

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? Designers or design students. Later, lay people in Switzerland, interested in ideas for revaluating yogurt jars.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help to) solve? Product designers and design students are looking for meaningful jobs and alternative models to earn a living. Together with the People’s Factory, its partners (see section on business impact / scale below) and its new approach to monetizing design work, this challenge provides an opportunity to explore how beautiful, practical items need to be designed so that lay people are able to produce these design items in the People’s Factory.

Due to the multitude of different types of plastic, recycling that material remains to be a challenge. Many laypeople interested in contributing to plastic recycling do not know where and how to go about it. This competition is about attracting more people to take up plastic and glass recycling themselves by developing and providing appealing designs. These designs can be produced and customized at the People’s Factory and their partners who provide an environment with the right tools and competent support and who provide design blueprints and instructions on their platforms.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it?  The combination of design ideas, virtual and local spaces and local resources to empower revaluation is unique. The idea offers the opportunity to not only have a competition resulting in publicly shared, beautiful designs for revaluated yoghurt jar products, it also motivates laypeople to go and learn how to make these designs themselves in an Open Factory.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? Crowdsourcing (PlasticTwist Thingiverse page), E-Wallet, Market Place

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? Basic tools and traditional / digital production equipment such as: 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC mill, Injection Moulding, Thermo Forming, …

What type of (recycled) materials is used? Glass and PE-LD 04 - can be combined with wood, leather, felt, cork, metal, filament, and many more.

Business/Scale and Impact: The competition is one of the events dedicated to kickstart a Swiss plastic revaluation system that is closely interlinked with the broader PlasticTwist Community. Once the products are developed, the instructions on how to make them will be made available on the People’s Factory and collaboration partner platforms as well as on the PlasticTwist Thingiverse page.

Designers can earn Plastic Tokens for their participation in the event (E-Wallet), sell the designs or products on the PlasticTwist Market Space and spend the earned tokens on other products or materials. The People’s Factory can contribute to the development of a (initially) niche alternative economy around plastic (or other materials) revaluation, e.g. by offering specific yoghurt jar revaluation workshops, potentially together with the original idea owners.

Fill&Go

Fill & Go  - Step it Up!

Fill & Go  - Step it Up!

Idea category: A SERIOUS challenge to the big soft drink producers

Author: Student group from Distributed Business Design Collaboration at Lucerne School of Business answering to the PlasticTwist’s challenge came up with this idea. Ivana Branadic, Melanie Brogli, Borislav Dejanovic, Kenan Ibranovic.

Description of the idea

Short description of idea: There are far too many single-use bottles in the world. We want to hang on to having a light and easy to use bottle and we also want our soft drinks, but we don’t need a new one all the time. Fill & Go is the new way to sell ALL soft drinks.  You get a bottle from the company, but you keep filling it up. The big companies install their taps in shops and only need to distribute their drinks to the store. This is already possible, but the scale is the difference.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? The target are the big soft drink companies that should stop producing so many plastic bottles.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? Fill & Go  - Step it Up! Wants to radically reduce the use of plastic bottles. The audience in this case are the companies that need to change their production and business strategy.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? We are not telling consumers to act differently or the politicians to make laws. We think that the producers should change their business format to avoid the excessive use of PET bottles. This is actually a chance for the businesses to have a unique selling proposition.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? Crouwdsourcing: This idea is about reducing plastic and the PlasticTwist platform would be the best place to advocate for it and make it visible for all the people involved in the revaluation of plastic.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? Only the PlasticTwist platform.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? Of course the new tap machines need to be circular but apart from that this is an idea which reduces the use of plastic.

Business/Scale and Impact: This should be a good business proposition for the large companies, but we also expect that this will boost drinking tap water, when you have the bottle this is cheaper ; )

Description of the idea

Short description of idea: We are used to the photos of animals dying from plastic pollution, we know the horrific numbers of plastic waste in the environment. But the real HORROR is maybe still a bit too far away. In a playful and exciting way, the visitors to the House of Plastic Horrors feel the impact of plastic – and change their habits quite quickly.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? Anyone who likes the flash of excitement when they don’t know what is next, when they face (organized) danger. It’s scary, tickling and fun, but because it is not really fiction it will have more impact than the normal ghosty-bloody fun fair horrors.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? It is really difficult make the connection and develop empathy with the victims of our plastic waste. This is our reality of as citizens of the world today and the House of Plastic Horrors teaches us to revaluate the situation.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? There have been exhibitions about plastic and artists have made impressive art works, but the House of Plastic Horrors makes you feel the impact and it will also be a booth at the exit which teaches you in 10 easy steps how to change your lifestyle.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? Connected to PlasticTwist it will integrate the platform as much as possible. The PlasticTokens will surely be accepted and you can gain more tokens (e-wallet), but pledging to use plastic differently after a visit to the House of Plastic Horrors.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? The House of Plastic Horrors will be supported by foundations, recycling plants and the plastic industry. We want to make use of their intimate understanding of plastic to tweak the expereice.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? Making the House of Plastic Horrors will take a lot of Plastic and we will work closely with recycling plants to develop the concept.

Business/Scale and Impact: As an open source concept the business will have an NGO format. There are no limits to have many Houses we can provide.

Unconditional Basic Plastic Total – for the global citizen

Unconditional Basic Plastic Total – for the global citizen

Idea category: Plastic currency

Authors: Interdisciplinary team of students and teachers of the Lucerne School of Applied Sciences and Arts (LUASA): The idea came out of an innovation workshop at the Future Laboratory Crealab Summerschool 2018 answering the PlasticTwist question of the design of citizen based plastic revaluation systems. The idea is Open Source, but should be realized in the PlasticTwist project.

Description of the idea

Short description of idea: The unconditional basic plastic total is an amount of plastic given to each global citizen by birth. As a global initiative it will address the vast inequality in the use of plastic. Having only so much plastic at your disposal for a life will make you change habits. If you are in an area where you use too much you will have to reduce, and it will give you a currency if you use very little plastic.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? This is global initiative. Anyone will have their amount of plastic and will be encouraged to use it in a meaningful way.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? The Unconditional Basic Plastic total will create awareness about the material plastic and It will trigger inventions that reduce and reuse plastic. Making plastic precious will change its status from waste to keep it from littering the environment.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? The unconditional basic income is acknowledged as a central solution to solve the issue of how to support and provide an incentive to live with awareness. It is also shown that the universal basic income is a basis for initiatives and innovation. In a similar way the Unconditional Basic Plastic Total will enable the global citizen to interact with the plastic quota/contingent they have in an aware and smart way.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? Unconditional Basic Plastic Total should be connected to the PlasticTwist Platform with marketplace and wallet and the UBPT should also be seen as a unique way to integrate the PlasticToken globally.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? The Platform will be the starting point of the UBPT so this will be the main tool.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? How the UBPT will be distributed over the different forms of plastic is yet to be determined however it will surely lead to more clarity about which steams and forms of plastic are produced and how they are reused.

Business/Scale and Impact: As an open source project and currency the UBPT will have a large scale impact .

Extra Material

We are inspired by the unconditional basic income which has a core role in the discussion of the future understanding of economic value. A book like Rutger Bregman’s Utopia for Realists is an important source.

Unconditional Basic Plastic Total – for the global citizen

Unconditional Basic Plastic Total – for the global citizen

Unconditional Basic Plastic Total – for the global citizen

Idea category: Plastic currency

Authors: Interdisciplinary team of students and teachers of the Lucerne School of Applied Sciences and Arts (LUASA): The idea came out of an innovation workshop at the Future Laboratory Crealab Summerschool 2018 answering the PlasticTwist question of the design of citizen based plastic revaluation systems. The idea is Open Source, but should be realized in the PlasticTwist project.

Mind the Plastic – circular solutions for food packaging

Mind the Plastic – circular solutions for food packaging

Mind the Plastic – circular solutions for food packaging

Idea category: Service for reverse-logistics, product design and consultancy on best practice packaging for food producers

Authors: The initiator of the idea is Louise Carpentier, an environmental engineer from Belgium. Louise wanted to support a local soup producer that wanted to recycle their single-use plastics. After initiating the idea, Mind the Plastic got supported during the first circular economy incubator batch from the Impact Hub Switzerland (2019) and got to know many DIY plastic recyclers (Fablab Luzern, Precious Plastic) as well as got in contact with PlasticTwist and visited one of their events.

Description of the idea: In the first pilot, Mind the Plastic joined forces with a Zürich-based soup producer to first collect and second, recycle their packaging. First tested products are a box to deliver catering material and planting pots for garden centers. In a third step, Mind the Plastic consults on more circular packaging options next time a batch of packaging needs to be purchased.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? This idea to take back packaging and make it better could be scaled to other food producers, communities, schools or public transport companies.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? This solution is innovative in 3 ways:

  • It allows food producers to take responsibility for their packaging.
  • The unmixed plastic granulate has a higher value compared to mixed plastics.
  • The individual recycled product creates an extra USP for the food producer on both the food and the recycled valuable product.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? Mind the Plastics offers individual solutions fof more ciruclar packaging. From reverse logistics,
to recycled products created to the needs and market of the food producer.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? The market place would be a good tool for Mind the Plastic connecting it to the PlasticToken.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? So far we have been using machinery from the DIY community but it became clear that we need
more semi-industrial ways of processing plastic if we want to scale this idea. Mind the Plastic would like to be part of Plastic Twist to connect with the Plastic recycling industry and do trials with industrial shredders and plastic melting facilities.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? In the pilot: PP5 cups are used.

Business/Scale and Impact: The circular business model behind mind the plastic is a combination of a consultancy service for logistics and best practice packaging with actual product design and
manufacturing. And this could be scaled, for example to spaces where many people consume a lot of plastics, think about all the foods stands in our train stations.

In the pilot, we aim to increase the return rate from 5 too at least 40 % in the next year. With the 0.5 tons of plastic used by the soup company, the impact is moderate. But the aim is to raise awareness among customers and show how companies can take
responsibility for their packaging.

Recycled plastic earrings

Mind the Plastic – circular solutions for food packaging

Recycled plastic earrings by Xander Kostroma

Idea category: Fashion jewelry made from discarded plastic HDPE bottles.

Authors: Xander Kostroma is 32 and emigrated to Switzerland from the UK in 2012 after accepting a job working in the Buying & Merchandising Head Office for Vans. He studied Surface Pattern Design (textiles for fashion) and worked as a buyer/merchandiser for a number of years before becoming self-employed in 2015.

Description of the idea: Xander’s idea is to make fashion jewelry from discarded HDPE bottles combining these elements with 925 Sterling Silver and/or hypoallergenic steel as finishing components.

What is the target market or target audience of the idea? Anyone who is interested in sustainable, ethical or circular fashion.

What problem or challenge of the target market/target audience does the idea (help) solve? Xander’s idea negates fast fashion completely. His jewelry plays into the consumers conscience when it comes to their purchasing power. Xander saw a shift in the market moving more towards sustainable fashion where he was able to then create a bridge between guilt-free shopping and looking good.

What is unique about the idea/ what are the Unique Selling Points of it? Each style is limited by the amount of plastic that is collected at any one time. As the collection is dictated by the plastic found and used, it means that each piece produced is 100% unique. Xander understood that consumers wanted to express their own individual style and felt some resistance when it came to “looking like everyone else”. One of the main advantages of his collection is that although each item of jewelry will be similar the next, no two pieces of jewelry will ever be the same.

Which PlasticTwist tools do the idea use? You could find the earrings on the marketplace. connected with the PlasticToken.

What machinery and tools need to be used to prototype or produce the idea/ concept? Xander had full studio access at FabLab in Lucerne where he used the: Shredder, Injection machine, Laser cutter and a custom-built hot plate to make his jewelry.

What type of (recycled) materials is used? HDPE No. 2 plastic bottles such as shampoo, conditioner and cleaning product bottles.

Business/Scale and Impact: Since 2015 Xander has been working as Self-employed.
He launched his own name label Xander Kostroma® in 2018 which he manages from Ticino. His company (Xander Kostroma Fashion Ltd.) is an active member of The Living Wage Foundation (UK) which agrees to pay above the National Minimum Wage to all his employees. The company is certified as vegan by PETa and is on the path to becoming a circular business through his recycled fashion.

Business operations: Xander designs and develops from Switzerland while managing a small warehouse and office space with 2 part-time employees in his hometown of Swansea, Wales. (UK). He already supplies 2 major fashion destination websites in the UK who have agreed to sell direct to the public his new recycled jewelry collection in the summer 2020.
